Hameur Bouazza (53) equalised Adam Proudlock's opener (26) as the Hornets started slowly but had a strong second half.
The Owls had the majority of the opening 20 minutes without troubling Chamberlain. The best chance of the early exchanges saw Bouazza break clear down the left channel and hit a looping shot which just grazed Lucas' crossbar.
The first attempt on target saw Jamie Hand head straight at Lucas from eight yards following Devlin's ball in from the right.
However on 26 minutes Hand lost the ball in midfield and Wednesday broke away to take the lead. The midfielder stumbled on the artificial surface, the Owls broke down the left and Proudlock was on hand to convert Chris Brunt's cross with a low shot at the second attempt after Sean Dyche blocked the first.
Just before halftime the Hornets came close to grabbing an equaliser with a flowing move. Neil Cox picked up the ball in his own half and found Neal Ardley with a pointpoint 50-yard ball into the left corner, Ardley hit an instant first-time cross and Bouazza flashed a header just over as the half ended.
Five minutes into the second half Hand almost made it 1-1 with a screamer bound for the top corner from way out on the left and Lucas dived full stretch to just tip the ball over the bar.
After 53 minutes the
The Hornets were much-improved after the break. Halftime sub Bruce Dyer shot straight at Lucas from 25 yards, while at the other end Brunt crashed a shot off the angle of post and bar from just outside the box from a free kick with Chamberlain beaten on the hour mark.
Back came the Hornets with Dyer and Danny Webber exchanging passes on the edge of the box, releasing Dyer but he didn't connect cleanly with the shot and Lucas scooped up the ball.
Brunt's free kick's were Wednesday's best attacking threat, testing Chamberlain on two more occasions as end 90 minutes ended and it went to penalties.
The penalties went like this:
Cox - scores
Webber - scores
Dyer - scores
Devlin - scores
