TOMMY Smith's goal proved to be the strike that lifted Watford back into the play-off positions and set up the semi-final tie against Hull.

The midfielder's goal in the 63rd minute proved to be all important as Wolves were breathing down Watford's necks with a goal difference that almost pipped the Hornets to the post.

Talking following the final whistle, Smith said: "I'm delighted, we have a never say die attitude that the gaffer has instilled into us and that's exactly what we called upon after we went 1-0 down.

"When Darius was sent off, we knew that we had it all to do and we responded in the best possible fashion. We knew that we had to score and I'm just so delighted that I got the goal that kept us in sixth.

"We weren't sure what was going on anywhere else and even at the end, I thought it was all over, I thought we'd done enough, but everyone was congregating around the dugout looking up at the press box, waiting for the scores to be shouted down."

And once they were, it was celebration time and now Watford face Hull. So what does Smith expect?

"We owe them one after the result up there, but at this stage, you're never going to get any easy ties in the play offs, everyone deserves to be up there.

"The play-offs are always a lottery and form goes out the window, which is probably just as well for us!"
