WATFORD Academy lost 2-0 at home to Leicester City on Saturday morning (8 December) in horrendous conditions at London Colney.

The visitors made it four wins on the spin with a goal in each half. Driving wind and torrential rain made for difficult conditions throughout the 90 minutes.

Marvin Sordell had the best opportunity of the first 45 for Watford as his shot from inside the box was cleared on the line.

The Golden Boys were also a threat from set pieces; with wide man Billy Gibson delivering balls into the box whenever possible, which was made harder to defend by the strong winds around London Colney.

Midfielder Kieron Forbes was also in fine form during the opening stages and looked to get forward to support Sordell and Liam Henderson whenever possible. Henderson was leading the line well and winning plenty of headers.

The first half had been quite equal but the Foxes took the lead three minutes before the interval.

Craig King scored the breakthrough goal after latching onto a long ball from deep within the Foxes' half, he controlled the ball and fired past Jonathan North.

With the weather getting worse after the break the game had little chance to flow with nature getting the upper hand.

However, both teams continued to work hard but it was the visitors who had the better of things and they looked confident after their goal.

They grabbed their second and this effectively killed off the game for Leicester. A corner was swung in from the Foxes' right and, thanks to the wind, flew in to the crowded box. Big substitute striker Ricky Sappleton was there to stick out a toe and prod home past North.

Despite the disappointing result, coach Sean Dyche and Academy Manager David Dodds will have been pleased with the application of the boys and the performance of left back Theo Angus.

Angus is another one of Mark Warburton's under 16s to effortlessly make the step up to Academy level and this will please the coaches at the Academy.

The under 18s are next in action on Tuesday night when they face Scunthorpe in the Third round of the FA Youth Cup at Glanford Park. Kick off is at 7.00pm.
