WATFORD FC's Community Sports & Education Trust and West Herts College have joined forces to create a 'Centre of Football Excellence'.

This exciting programme will give youngsters between the ages of 16-19 the chance to combine academic studies with practical football experience.

The academic programme will give scholars a grounding in football coaching. They will complete a BTEC First Diploma, National Award or Certificate in Sport as well as completing FA coaching badges.

Students will also train and play on a competitive basis - an experience similar to that of Watford FC's own Academy scholars. By completing the one/two year programme players will gain the skills required to help them progress to a higher standard of football as well as gain experiences necessary to work in community football coaching.

The unique package is a fantastic opportunity for youngsters keen to develop their talent on the football pitch and find a route into a career in football coaching.

Chris Andrews, Education Development Manager, Watford's Community Sports & Education Trust, commented: "This is a really exciting opportunity for local students with an ambition of being involved with a professional football club either as a player or coach."

A former student Mark Timmington added: "The course was very beneficial to me both as a player and as a football coach. It is unique because of its partnership with Watford Football Club which gave me the opportunity of coaching on a regular basis. It helped me to progress from a student into a confident football coach."
