AFTER seeing his side almost throw away all three points in a disappointing opening half at The Valley, Aidy Boothroyd declared himself as happy with the second half display as he was unhappy with the first.45 minutes.

And the draw may have felt more like a win in the Hornets' dressing room, as they dragged themselves back in to the Championship top-of-the-table match with a two goal salvo in as many minutes.

"We did a lot of things wrong in the first half, a lot of things that we don't usually do as a side," said the manager.

"Charlton like to play in front of you and through the middle and we sat very deep which allowed them to do that.

"Dan's own goal was one of those things but I was disappointed to be two down at half-time.

"In the second half we were much better and we had enough chances to go on and win it in the end."

Boothroyd responded to the early setbacks with a continuation of his half-time team talk out on the pitch just moments before the second half kicked off, but what exactly did he say to his players?

"I just reminded them that it's the inches that count if we want to win the Championship. Stoke showed that last night and I just reminded the players of that, and that we needed some big performances in that second half.

"To a man we got that from them, so that was pleasing."

John-Joe O'Toole and Dan Shittu continued to help Watford's forwards out with goals from other areas of the field and Boothroyd had words of praise for both.

"John-Joe has scored four now which is a great return for a player like him. He likes to get in to the box and he likes to have that physical contact with people.

"He just looks like a street-fighter with that hair, and he doesn't care about reputations, or playing in front of big or small crowds.

"I was really pleased for Dan to come here and score as I know it means a lot to him. He looked a little tired at times, having only just come back from Africa, but he deserved his goal and it's all the more pleasing for him given what happened at the other end."
