THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'
IT'S time to change vowed Aidy Boothroyd, as he showed plenty of dignity in defeat at the KC Stadium tonight (Wednesday), before looking ahead to the future of the club.
His side bowed out at the semi-final stage of the play-offs and amidst that disappointment, the manager was able to offer up his thoughts on moving forward, with clarity and humility. To surmise, he will lead the change - of players and of the way to play.
First and foremost he just wanted to thank the fans though, as both he and his players were prevented from going back out on to the field due to the understandable on-pitch celebrations of Hull City's fans.
Speaking straight after the final whistle a composed Aidy started by saying: "There are loads of disappointing things about tonight. I'm a bit disappointed we didn't get out to say thanks to our fans, who were great from the start.
"I said we were going to have a go at it, we did, the way we played and what we did I was very, very pleased with in the first half and then we gave away a really, really poor goal and it was an uphill task after that.
"When you're chasing, you're going to get countered on because they've got pace and power and we didn't take our chances when we had them. Hendo's had one which has been cleared off the line. But when it's not your time it's not your time I guess.
"It's not as if we've got to worry about goal difference - we were chasing the game. You may as well get beat 4-1 as 2-1 because you're out. We just went for it and unfortunately they were quite clinical in what they did.
"When we had our dominance we didn't get more goals. I think you have to give credit to Hull, maybe it's their time?
"I think the players have given everything, as they always do, but I think tonight and Sunday is perhaps a look into the future of how we need to do things, in the way that we play and what we do."
So, then came the time to reflect, analyse and look ahead to what might be for Aidy and the squad.
"It's been a difficult season because obviously we started so well. I've got some very disappointed players in there, we're all in it to win it and we started off with that intention at the beginning of the season and to go out in a semi-final is particularly disappointing.
"You reap what you sow; I think we've gone out because we deserved to go out.
"I think there's work to be done on our style, that's for sure, because we've conceded four goals tonight, but we've got a nice young foundation to build on.
"The likes of Ainsworth and Mariappa did well tonight I thought, and I think that moving forward I've got to look at the squad and what needs adjusting and maybe be a little bit more ruthless than I've been.
"We'll drive home tonight and lick our wounds, we'll have tomorrow off to reflect and we'll be back in Friday and get together with the staff and the players. We need to be coming back early and we need perhaps to shift one or two people in and out I think.
"It's a huge disappointment because we're used to winning aren't we? We're used to success.
"Is it a success to get to the play-off semi-final? We'll it should be but it is isn't, because the nature of what I say and what we do as a club - we expect to be up there.
"As I've said you get what you deserve in the end. It always evens itself out and we've got to recharge and come again strong, but there is going to need to be a change and a transition because it doesn't happen overnight, but change is a word we'll need to do.
"There are a few things I've certainly learnt about my players this year and there are a few things I've learnt about myself and this club and what we need to do.
"I'm deeply disappointed, particularly for our support, who have been brilliant. Hopefully they'll be reading this.
"There'll be the inquest. We need to change players and the way we play, we have got to change the way we do things and we'll do that."
